Avoiding Holiday Remorse!

The Holidays are upon us. In the US  we have had quite a few in a row. Holidays often revolve around family/friends, food, alcoholic beverages, and what I call "Holiday Remorse". It occurs when we eat and drink far more than we normally would. Sound familiar? What to do?

You may have heard this before, but it does work. It allows you to take some control of the situation. Go ahead and enjoy a few of your favorite treats, especially those that you get a chance to enjoy only at this time of year. Your Aunt's homemade pie or fudge. Your Mom's homemade bread (if you can do gluten). The amazing wine or cocktails that your Uncle/Neighbor/Friend puts together. And, really savor whatever you choose....don't wolf it down! If it's New Year's Eve then, enjoy that sparkling wine or Champagne and make a wish for 2022.

What is your backup plan to help allow you to do this without huge regrets? Plan to bring that tried and true veggie tray and perhaps, a fruit tray. Have a homemade salad dressing/dip that is actually good for you. You can even order the trays if that works best for you in the Holiday craziness, including New Year's Eve. Bring a bottle of water, even sparkling water for yourself. I love Mountain Valley sparkling  water with pomegranate juice added to it. And, I often bring a bottle of wine that is organic/biodynamic and lower in alcohol for myself (and to share). There are many European ones that are wonderful (and may be organic, but not certified). It allows me to enjoy and feel great the next day.

If you are gluten-free, then consider a bit of gluten-free bread to allow you to enjoy bread with everyone. If dairy is an issue, then a small container of your favorite non-dairy milk if you feel you need it for coffee, tea, etc. Most people will understand and may even want to sample whatever your substitute happens to be! That's really all there is to it. Are you flying? Well, there is Instacart in many places for you to pickup or have them deliver wherer you will be.

If you're with family, what to do if they are trying to send home leftovers with you? Let them know that while you enjoyed all the wonderful food, but just being with them was the real treat. Explain you don't want to regret a thing about your visit, so you getting back on track as soon as you get home. Hopefully, they will accept that. Fingers crossed! You probably don't have that to worry about if it's New Year's.

If you're spending the weekend, then plan as many walks outside as you can to get both the fresh air and exercise. Try to keep up with your sleep as best you can. If you're driving, be sure to stop and walk around a bit or stretch. Then, as the New Year begins you have enjoyed yourself, but are still off to a great start. Happy New Year!
